History of the Gehrke Farm
August Prill purchased what is now
Gehrke property in 1879. The original 120 acres was purchased for $575
dollars, thats $4.79 / acre.
As the story goes, he went to town
to buy an axe on credit because he didn't have money for it. There were
2 hardware stores and the first one wouldn't give him an axe, the
second one did and he never went back to the first one for the rest of
his life. Can you imagine clearing farm land with an axe and horses?
That's what they did. Somewhere in there another 40 acres was purchased.
Thats now the back fenceline against the Feathers property.
His son
Albert Gehrke owned a farm on the west side of Manawa. At one time
it covered most of the block between Depot St, Cty B, Wolf Rd. and
the railroad tracks. As well as 40 acres to the west of Wolf Rd. The
land west of the Little Wolf River is still owned by the Gehrke family.
The land east of the river is now the Rodeo Grounds, Kolbe and Kolbe
and various smaller parcels.
Keith (Albert's son) and Virginia
Gehrke purchased the 160 acre Prill farm in 1953. In 1960 they
purchased 31 acres by Hwy B from Keith's half brother Malvern Zemple
shortly after the Zemple barn burned and they moved to another farm
closer to Royalton. That makes the present 191 acres.
Kent and Michael are the 4th and 5th generation to hunt on the property
